UNIONDALE, NEW YORK (June 12, 2024)— Uniondale High School recently celebrated senior Chika Akazi for winning the state championship for 100-meter hurdles at the New York State Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The championship was held by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association at Cicero-North Syracuse High School. Chika finished the 100-meter hurdles with an impressive time of 14.07 seconds. 

“Chika’s continued success in meets speaks to her incredible determination and work ethic,” said Dr. Monique Darrisaw-Akil, Superintendent of Uniondale School District. “She is a remarkable athlete and an excellent student. We wish her nothing but success in all her future competitions.”

Chika also competes in indoor track and field. This past season, she was a champion in the 55-meter hurdles, despite being the last qualifier in the event with a time of 8.48. Once the competition started however, she defied the odds and won the finals with a blistering finish of 8.21 seconds. 

“Chika is an exemplary student athlete,” said Peter Cardone, Director of Physical Education & Health for Uniondale High School. “She sets a goal and works tirelessly to achieve it. I would also like to commend Chika’s coach, Leigh Pollet for continuing to lead her and the other athletes on our track and field team to success”

Uniondale High School will be cheering on the girls’ track and field Team as they head to Greensboro, North Carolina to compete for titles in the Adidas Outdoor Nationals on June 14.

Uniondale School District supports student journeys, actively supporting students in their chosen environments as they mature into adulthood through their educational experiences.
