Mr. Frank Abel with the Uniondale High School band

Award Granted by the Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame

Uniondale Union Free School District is proud to announce that Mr. Frank Abel, retired Band Director at the Uniondale High School from 1996-2011, has been inducted into the Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame as an Educator of Note. The Music Educator of Note Award celebrates excellence in music education on Long Island.

Mr. Frank Abel developed an early love for the musical arts and went to The High School of Music & Art, where he studied and became a skilled classical violinist. He then studied Music Education at
Howard University and taught vocal music at Mulligan Jr. High School. During the day, he taught, and at night, he performed. Mr. Abel was a singer and keyboardist in rhythm and blues bands, performing in
nightclubs throughout New York City and later in the club and concert scene, where he toured in Europe and Africa. Mr. Abel then went on to teach at Wyandanch Memorial High School, where at the same
time, he pursued his Master’s Degree in Music Education and then made his way to Uniondale High School. While at Uniondale, Mr. Abel directed the High School Band and received the prestigious
Superintendents Spotlight Award. At this time, he was interviewed for the cover story of the internationally distributed School Band and Orchestra Magazine.

“We are incredibly proud to see Mr. Frank Abel, a renowned talent, be recognized by the Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame for his contributions to the field of music education,” said Mr.
Kelvin Jenkins, Director of Music and Art. “Uniondale had the pleasure of utilizing Mr. Abel’s musical genius over the years, shaping amazing musicians in his High School Band class. With thirty-five years as
a highly esteemed educator, we thank Mr. Abel for his commitment to inspiring the next generation of musicians during his time here at Uniondale.”

Each year, the Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame selects one public, private, college or studio educator who demonstrates a commitment to music education. Mr. Abel marks the third time in five years that the Uniondale School District has had a music teacher inducted into the Hall of Fame. Uniondale’s previous inductees include Lynnette Carr-Hicks, founder of the High School Show Choir “Rhythm of the Knight,” and Susan Weber, former orchestra teacher and past president of the New York
State School Music Association.
